The “Chateau de Fontainebleau and Salamander” represent INSEAD
King Francois premier, in the 16 th century, transformed the then “hunting lodge” in the “best Chateau in the World”, where the future success of the Insead MBA’s meets the chateau’s glory. The Chateau de Fontainebleau is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. When the Chateau is mentioned, Insead has become part of its reputation.
60 years ago in 1959, when Insead was started, the first Insead Students had their conferences, lectures and other events in the Chateau. Today conferences are still held in the chateau and the Insead Graduations ceremonies take place in the chateau with a photo gathering on the chateaux’ entrance staircases.
Francois Ier was known for his “ salamander addiction” and had in each of his many french chateaux different Salamander sculptures. The Salamander is the hallmark of Democracy, its power of Fire and consequently of Mankind. The Insead green Salamander logo was inspired by Francois Ier Salamanders.
